The 1961 GMC Suburban is well over 50 years old at this point but that isn’t stopping one owner from hitting the trails. Michael Wymer took to the garage and created a customized monster of a Suburban. The end result is a beast that boasts more power than most sports cars along with all of the capability an SUV has to offer.
At more than half a century old, most drivers wouldn’t give the 1961 GMC Suburban a second glance – until they hear its engine roar. The 6.6-liter Duramax V8 engine boasts a heart-pounding 427 hp and 754 lb-ft of torque and that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the heart of this monster.
Wymer started the project on a shortened GMC Sierra 2500HD chassis. From there, he added a lift kit, shortened the CV axels, and created custom upper control arms. Normally such a challenge would take a team of mechanics but Wymer took the project on solo.
Today, he uses the Suburban to tow and haul other projects as well as take the occasional off-roading adventure. You won’t find another 50-plus-year-old vehicle that can do all of that and more!
We here at Ewing Buick GMC never cease to be amazed at what owners can do to their vehicles.
