GMC is getting a massive software upgrade for Android Auto, enabling compatibility for the 2016 Canyon, Sierra, and Yukon. Model equipped with the eight-inch IntelliLink touchscreen system will now have the option to select Android Auto.
According to GMC, this is in addition to Apple CarPlay, a feature that has been expanded to appear with the arrival of the all-new 2017 GMC Acadia. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay allow drivers to connect to their smartphones easily.
“Providing Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility ushers in a new era of staying connected in a convenient manner,” said Duncan Aldred, U.S. vice president, Buick and GMC.
GMC Android Auto features are built around Google Maps, Google Now, and the ability to talk to Google. Messaging apps include WhatsApp, Google Play Music, Spotify, and more. The new Android Auto and Apple CarPlay options are in addition to the OnStar 4G LTE connectivity that is now being offered most new GMC models. Third-party apps will also be available, letting you select the apps you want to use.
